Starting from next week, the Lagos state government has promised to sell bags of rice at 13,000 each.

The Lagos State Government on Friday said it could not commence the sale of its Lake Rice on December 15 as earlier planned to ensure that plots to hijack the project was averted.

 

The Special Adviser on Food Security to Governor Akinwumi Ambode, Mr. Sanni Okanlawan, said that the rice would now be on sale from next week

 

The government had planned to sell the rice at N13,000 per 50kg bag at the 57 Local Government and Local Council Development area headquarters from Dec. 15.

 

Okanlawon said the government was installing mechanisms for Lagosians to celebrate the best Yuletide without hiccups posed by money bags.

 

He said, “We are working out the modalities to make sure that what the government intends to sell at N13,000 was not hijacked and sold to Lagosians at N15,000, that is what we do not want.

“From all indications, hopefully, by next week Lake Rice will be out, so, we want everything to be in place before it is out.”

 

LASG had on December 8 promised that it was ready to roll out Lake Rice on December 15 to Lagosians at N13,000 per 50 kg towards the Yuletide celebrations.

 

The Special Adviser made the disclosure during the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry National Agriculture Stakeholders Summit.

 

He said, “Lake Rice is the acronym of both Lagos and Kebbi States joint product which will be out to the public on Dec. 15 at a cost of N13,000 per 50kg bag as it is already subsidised by the government.

“To make it more available, the rice will be sold at the 57 LGA’s and LCDA’s for easy accessibility and to guard against unwanted persons diverting the product, the state has put in place a committee.”

 

 Lagos State had in March signed an MoU with the Kebbi State Government to produce rice paddy to be milled and packaged in Lagos State.

How Russian Hackers Helped Trump Win 2016 US Presidential Election

New details has surfaced how Russian President Vladimir Putin worked with hackers to help Donald Trump win the US Presidential election. 

Russian President Vladimir Putin supervised his intelligence agencies’ hacking of the U.S. presidential election and turned it from a general attempt to discredit American democracy to an effort to help Donald Trump, three U.S. officials said on Thursday.

 

U.S. intelligence agencies’ conclusion that Russia tried to influence the election by hacking people and institutions, including Democratic Party bodies, has angered President-elect Trump, who says he won the Nov. 8 vote fairly. Russian officials have denied accusations of interference in the U.S. election.

 

Separately, a senior White House official said on Thursday that Putin was likely to have been aware of the cyber attacks but he fell short of accusing the Russian president.

“I don’t think things happen in the Russian government of this consequence without Vladimir Putin knowing about it,” Ben Rhodes, the White House’s deputy national security adviser, told MSNBC. “When you’re talking about a significant cyber intrusion like this, we’re talking about the highest levels of government.”

 

The U.S. officials – who have knowledge of intelligence information on the matter – said on the condition of anonymity that the hacking of U.S. political groups and figures had a more general focus at first.

“This began merely as an effort to show that American democracy is no more credible than Putin’s version is,” one of the officials said.

“It gradually evolved from that to publicizing (Hillary) Clinton’s shortcomings and ignoring the products of hacking Republican institutions, which the Russians also did,” the official said.

 

By the fall, the official said, it became an effort to help Trump’s campaign because “Putin believed he would be much friendlier to Russia, especially on the matter of economic sanctions” than Democratic rival Clinton.

 

Democratic President Barack Obama said in an interview with National Public Radio that the United States will take action against Russia.

 

“I think there is no doubt that when any foreign government tries to impact the integrity of our elections … we need to take action and we will,” he said according to excerpts of the Thursday interview released by NPR.

“At a time and a place of our own choosing. Some of it may be … explicit and publicized; some of it may not be. … Mr. Putin is well aware of my feelings about this, because I spoke to him directly about it,” Obama said.

 

NBC reported earlier that U.S. intelligence officials have “a high level of confidence” Putin was personally involved in the Russian cyber campaign against the United States.

 

Hacked emails of Democratic operatives and Clinton aides were leaked during the presidential campaign, and at times dominated the news agenda. The U.S. officials said Russia also hacked Republicans but did little to nothing with the information they found.

 

PUTIN ROLE?

 

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told state TV channel Rossiya-24 that he was “dumbstruck” by the NBC report of Putin’s alleged involvement.

 

“I think this is just silly, and the futility of the attempt to convince somebody of this is absolutely obvious,” he said.

 

Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, has brushed off reports of Russian hacking of U.S. political institutions.

“If Russia, or some other entity, was hacking, why did the White House wait so long to act? Why did they only complain after Hillary lost?” Trump wrote in a post on Twitter on Thursday.

 

In fact, the U.S. government did formally accuse Russia of a campaign of cyber attacks against U.S. political organizations in October – one month ahead of the election.

 

Obama last week ordered a review by the U.S. intelligence agencies about foreign interference in the 2016 election.

 

Asked on Thursday about the hacks, Secretary of State John Kerry described how Obama had been considering the evidence ahead of the October announcement.

 

“The president made the decision based on the input that was carefully, carefully vetted by the intelligence community … that he did have an obligation to go out to the country and give a warning. And he did so,” Kerry said at a news briefing.

 

The three U.S. officials who spoke to Reuters said the fact that Putin oversaw a hacking operation was not surprising and is standard operating procedure in Russia.

 

“If anything, given his background as a KGB officer, Putin has a much tighter grip on all Russian intelligence operations, civilian and military, foreign and domestic, than any democratic leader does,” one official said.

 

The reports of Russian hacking have raised concerns among both political parties in Congress, with top Republicans breaking with Trump to call for closer scrutiny.

 

Some Republican lawmakers have also questioned Trump’s pick for Secretary of State, Exxon Mobil Corp Chief Executive Rex Tillerson, who has close business ties to the Russian government.

In an interview with newsmen in Lagos on Friday, Stanley Ezenga, the National Publicity Secretary of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) lauded the Federal Government’s plans to lift foreign exchange restriction on 41 imported items.

 

According to Vanguard, the President Buhari-led Federal Government had indicated its readiness to lift the forex ban it placed on some 41 items in 2015.

 

The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, had in the 2017 Fiscal Policy Roadmap, said Federal Government 'will replace administrative measures on list of 41 items with fiscal measures to reduce demand pressure in the parallel market.'

 

Ezenga said that the plan would boost importation activities at the nation’s ports, adding that lifting of ban on the items would not solve the declining value of the naira, urging government to come up with a more result-oriented forex policy.

 

“The plan by the government to lift foreign exchange restriction on some 41 imported items is good news for import.

 

“We can now have more import activities at the ports and the various jobs lost to the restriction can now come back.

 

“However, the unbanning alone will not solve the problem of the naira. Government should come with a more workable policy to boost value of the naira,“ Ezenga said.

 

He said that freight forwarders had lost 50 per cent jobs to the restriction, hoping that the lifting would address the situation.

After losing the closely contested US Presidential elections to Donald Trump recently, Hillary Clinton has finally explained why she fell short. 

Hillary Clinton, the former Democratic presidential nominee, has spoken out on why she lost the election.

 

She blamed Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Director James Comey for her defeat in Tuesday’s presidential election.

 

According to Reuters, Mrs. Clinton said in a conference call with her top campaign donors on Saturday that Mr. Trump was able to seize on both of Mr. Comey’s statements and used them to attack her, according to two participants on the call.

 

According to the participants who were on the call, Mrs. Clinton told her supporters on Saturday that her team had drafted a memo that looked at the changing opinion polls leading up to the election and that the letter from Mr. Comey proved to be a turning point.

 

The memo prepared by Mrs. Clinton’s campaign, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, said voters who decided which candidate to support in the last week were more likely to support Trump than Clinton.

 

“In the end, late breaking developments in the race proved one hurdle too many for us to overcome,” the memo concluded.

 

Mrs. Clinton was projected by nearly every national public opinion poll as the heavy favourite going into the race but Republican Donald Trump won the election, shocking many throughout the nation and prompting widespread protests.

 

Mrs. Clinton has kept a low profile since her defeat after delivering her concession speech on Wednesday morning.

 

She said Mr. Comey’s decision to go public with the renewed examination of her email server had caused an erosion of support in the upper Midwest, according to three people familiar with the call.

 

Mrs. Clinton lost in Wisconsin, the first time since 1984 that the state favoured a Republican candidate in a presidential election.

 

Although the final result in Michigan has still not been tallied, it is leaning Republican, in a state that last favoured the Republican nominee in 1988.

 

Mr. Comey sent a letter to Congress few days before the election announcing that he was reinstating an investigation into whether Mrs. Clinton mishandled classified information when she used a private email server while secretary of state from 2009 to 2012.

 

The FBI’s director announced a week later that he had reviewed emails and continued to believe she should not be prosecuted, but the political damage was already done.

 

While the second letter cleared her of wrongdoing, Mrs. Clinton said that reinforced to Trump’s supporters that the system was rigged in her favour and motivated them to mobilise on the election day.

 

A spokesperson for the FBI could not immediately be reached for comment.

 

On the phone call, Dennis Chang, who served as Clinton’s finance chair, said her campaign and the national party had raised more than $900 million from more than three million individual donors, according to the two participants who spoke to Reuters.

USA Presidency: FBI Absolves Clinton of E-mail Criminality

The FBI says it has found no evidence of criminality in a new batch of Hillary Clinton emails, boosting her campaign two days before the election.

FBI Director James Comey told Congress his agency's review had found nothing to alter its original conclusion.

In July, he said Mrs Clinton had been careless but not criminal in handling sensitive material on her private email server while secretary of state.

The issue flared up again with the discovery of new "pertinent" emails.

They were reportedly found on the laptop of Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of one of the Democratic presidential candidate's closest advisers.

Mr Comey's original letter late last month to lawmakers, revealing the bureau's inquiry into Mrs Clinton's emails had been revived, shook up the White House race and reinvigorated the campaign of Republican nominee Donald Trump.

It was much ado about nothing, but it certainly amounted to something. While FBI Director James Comey, in effect, said "never mind" with regards to Hillary Clinton's emails, for the past two weeks the story has dominated the political conversation, and Democrats have paid a price.

While Mrs Clinton's presidential hopes have stabilised, talk of a possible rout - and sweeping down-ballot victories in congressional races - are a distant memory.

Mrs Clinton will now try to focus on her closing campaign message. Donald Trump almost certainly will continue to accuse his opponent of corruption and, perhaps, again allege the FBI is covering for her.

With only two days until voting, the dust kicked up by this story won't have fully settled by the time Americans head to the polls.

Once this election is over, there should be serious soul-searching within the FBI and the media about how this saga played out. The nation's top law-enforcement agency was a source of constant leaks, as internal disputes spilled into public view.

If Mr Trump wins, many on the left will blame Mr Comey for the result. If Mrs Clinton prevails, she likely will bear a lasting grudge over this political near-miss.

11 Football fans killed in South Sudan shooting

At least 11 people are dead and 16 others have been injured after an attack on football fans in South Sudan, local media report.

A gunman opened fire on a crowd watching an English Premier League game near the town of Juba.

South Sudan's National Courier newspaper said the gunman had escaped despite a "prompt response" from security forces.

Police are investigating, but have not yet identified a motive.

The incident took place in Gure, a suburb of Juba, the South Sudan capital.

The city was hit by violence earlier this year as rival political factions clashed, prompting the vice-president, Riek Machar, to flee the country.

South African Rise Against President Zuma

South Africa’s capital Pretoria witnessed a day of rage against beleaguered President Jacob Zuma as opposition parties, civil society groups, religious leaders, prominent businesspeople and students united to call for him to step down.

“We have to come to terms with the fact that as long as we have President Zuma as president of the country, it is not possible to turn the situation around,” said Sipho Pityana, convenor of the Save South Africa protest group and chair of mining firm AngloGold Ashanti.

Support for the ruling African National Congress (ANC) has slumped along with the president's popularity. While the ANC successfully midwifed the post-apartheid era, Zuma's stewardship has split the party, and split the union movement that helped guarantee its electoral success.

Thousands of demonstrators marched up to riot police lines at the gates to the Union Buildings, the seat of government, as helicopters hovered overhead and queues of armoured vans idled in streets nearby.

Sporadic clashes saw protesters throw stones and light fires at road junctions while police responded with rubber bullets and stun grenades, as nearby hotels and cafes drew down their shutters and erected barbed wire barricades.

The protest action started early in the morning with a church rally by prominent business people, religious leaders, dissenting ANC grandees and civil society groups.

They were joined by supporters of the Democratic Alliance, the largest opposition party in the country which formed a series of coalitions to seize control of Johannesburg and Pretoria metropolises in local elections in May.

But the biggest turn-out was for Julius Malema’s radical Economic Freedom Fighters’ party, which saw between 5,000 and 10,000 demonstrators clad in the party’s distinctive red outfits march from a central square to the lawns of the Union Buildings.

The protesters attracted the biggest turn-out because of Malema’s threats to drag Zuma – who judiciously left the country for a meeting in Zimbabwe – out of his office.

But the vast majority of protesters contended themselves with waving placards calling for the head of the “Thief in Chief” and for fellow South Africans to “defend the democratic state”.

“We are here to give Zuma notice,” said Oupa Nplapo, 36, an engineering firm employee. “He must leave and take his ANC cronies with him.”

A fellow marcher wearing no party colours, who gave his name only as Abe, said his motivation was not political. “We need a change of leadership, our country has stalled with this one,” the 46-year-old private investigator said.

Elsewhere in the country students clashed again with police in Cape Town and Stellenbosch over high tuition fees, women marched in memory of the woman Zuma was acquitted of raping before he became president and church leaders led by the Archbishop of Cape Town held a silent vigil as a “lament for our beloved country”. The Nelson Mandela Foundation and powerful trade union Nehawu also added their voices to calls for Zuma to step aside.

If protests continue, the ANC will be thinking hard about Zuma's future.

The Pretoria demonstrations had been meant to coincide with the appearance in a magistrate’s court nearby of the finance minister, Pravin Gordhan, who was facing what were widely-believed to be trumped-up charges of fraud for his blocking of Zuma’s spending plans. Those charges were dropped on Monday after the state prosecutor admitted he had no evidence to back them up.

Instead, Zuma’s lawyers appeared in Pretoria High Court to halt the release of an explosive report by the public watchdog that implicated him in a corrupt relationship with a trio of Indian brothers named the Guptas. The brothers allegedly dictated ministerial appointments and public policy in what has become known in South Africa as “State Capture”.

That hearing went ahead, to the sounds of whistles and chants from marchers outside, with Zuma’s legal team announcing to general surprise that he would drop his injunction bid “in the interests of justice and speedy resolution of the matter”.

“The president will give consideration to the contents of the report in order to ascertain whether it should be a subject of a court challenge,” spokesman Bongani Ngqulunga said.

Public protecter Thuli Madonsela said Zuma may have broken the executive code of ethics with actions such as in December swapping finance ministers three times in five days, wiping billions off the value of the rand and consequently South Africans’ pensions and savings. His preferred choice of candidate was also alleged to have met the Gupta brothers every day in the seven days preceding his appointment.

Madonsela, whose term of office ended last month, just days after she completed the report, ordered that a commission of inquiry be set up to probe the alleged corrupt relationship further – and stipulated that the chief justice and not Zuma appoint the presiding judge.

Shocking! ABSU Fresh Graduate Stabbed to Death by a Security Guard!

A man who had just graduated from Abia State University has suffered the most tragic fate in the hands of a security guard. 

 

Max, a fresh graduate from Abia State University Uturu, was stabbed to death by a gateman attached to one of the lodge around the school.

 

The sad incident reportedly occurred yesterday, November 1st.

 

According to Abia Facts Newspaper, the deceased identified as Max who graduated recently and celebrated his birthday on 25th October, 2016, had on the day of the incident, visited one of the lodge around the University, apparently to settle some scores with some students living there.

 

 

A heated argument ensued and the security guard attached to the private lodge requested that Max leave the environment probably due to the confusion he was creating.

 

This got Max angry and they started fighting. Max picked up a rod which he used to hit and tear the stomach of the gateman to the extent that his intestines almost fell off.

 

In anger, the gateman ran into his apartment with his hand holding his torn stomach, picked up his dagger and stabbed Max to death.

 

The gateman is currently in a critical condition receiving treatment, while Max is in the mortuary.

The Nigerian Nobel-winning author, now living in the US, tells Oxford students that it is up to young people to stand against ‘ultranationalism’ – in a speech that also took aim at Brexit and Bob Dylan.

The Nobel literature laureate Wole Soyinka has told students that if Donald Trump is elected president of the United States next week, he will leave the country according to the Guardian.

“If in the unlikely event he does win, the first thing he’ll do is to say [that] all green-card holders must reapply to come back into the US. Well, I’m not waiting for that,” said Soyinka, who is scholar-in-residence at New York University’s Institute of African American Affairs this autumn.

 

“The moment they announce his victory, I will cut my green card myself and start packing up.”

The Nigerian playwright and poet, who was imprisoned in Nigeria during its civil war, later fleeing the country and receiving a death sentence in absentia, urged young people to stand up against oppression.

Giving a seminar to students at Oxford University, he also laid into Brexit, saying it was a “ridiculous decision”, and part of an international rise in what he called “ultranationalism”.

EFCC Re-Arraigns Ex-Governor Orji Kalu Over Corruption Charges

A former Nigerian governor has been docked by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as the fight against corruption intensities. 

Orji Kalu, a former Governor of Abia State, is currently in the dock before a Federal High Court in Lagos.

 

According to The Punch, the ex governor is answering alleged corruption charges by the EFCC.

 

Kalu and others had been initially arraigned in 2007 before Justice Adamu Bello of the Federal High Court, Abuja (now retired).

 

They were arraigned in an amended 34-count charge over an alleged diversion of about N3.2bn from the Abia State Government’s treasury during Kalu’s tenure as governor.

With the dust yet to settle over an interview Aisha Buhari granted the British Broadcasting Corporation, a Second Republic lawmaker, Junaid Mohammed, has stated that the President’s recent trip to Germany was for medical reasons.

Mohammed, a Russian-trained medical doctor, revealed this in an interview with Sunday Punch on Saturday.

Mrs. Buhari had accused an unnamed cabal, made up of individuals who were not part of the struggle for Buhari’s emergence as president, of having hijacked the Presidency.

Expressing her frustration, Mrs. Buhari threatened not to support any attempt by her husband to re-contest in 2019 if things do not change. Mohammed alleged that the president’s handlers were making similar mistakes committed by those who served as close advisers to ex-President Umaru Yar’Adua.

According to him, Buhari was in Germany to receive treatment for an undisclosed ailment but his handlers arranged a state visit in an attempt to mask the truth.

Mohammed said, “The reason the president travelled to Germany was not what it was advertised to be. The trip is basically a medical trip. It was undertaken for medical reasons. It was only converted to a state visit as an afterthought and that tells you the level of contempt the handlers of the president have for Nigerians. We blamed the handlers of Yar’Adua for the way they kept his ailment secret.

“Now, Nigerians have a big surprise awaiting them. They have not been told the truth about the real state of the man’s (Buhari) health. He is our president.

Nigerians elected him into office and we must never allow individuals to play with our intelligence and do something stupid and dangerous to our country. I hope and pray that next time, the Nigerian people would be told the truth. It’s a medical trip; they (handlers) issued statements to camouflage the real reason behind the trip.”
The former lawmaker stated that those behind the cover-up did not love the president more than Nigerians who voted him into office. Mohammed also accused those criticising Mrs. Buhari of hypocrisy.

Unrepentant! Buhari Insists His Wife's Place Remains in the Kitchen in Another Interview!

In yet another explosive interview in Germany which has already gone viral online, President Muhammadu Buhari is insisting that the place of his wife, Aisha, is in the kitchen. 

On Friday, the internet went into frenzy buzzing with mixed reactions and criticisms after President Muhammadu Buhari said his wife belonged in the kitchen, and “the other room,” apparently a euphemism for the bedroom.

 

Recall that the president made the above comment at a press conference after a closed-door meeting, with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, in response to an interview his wife, Aisha granted the BBC, where she said that his government had been hijacked, adding that she might not support her husband under the present circumstances if he seeks re-election in 2019.

 

Buhari in his reaction had stated; “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but my wife belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room.

“It is not easy to do away with opposition or people who did not follow you along your campaign trail. I hope my wife will remember that I was on the field for 12 years; I tried three times, the fourth time I managed to succeed. And I ended up the first three times in the Nigerian Supreme Court, so I claim superior knowledge over her and the rest of the opposition and I succeeded.”

 

In response to a backlash from the statement, Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, said the president was only joking.

 

But in an interview with DW’s Phil Gayle, Buhari reiterated his position for the second time, saying the function of his wife was to take care of his home:

DW: Recently your wife criticised your choices for top jobs, and you responded by saying “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room.” What did you mean by that, sir?

 

Buhari: I am sure you have a house. You know where your kitchen is, you know where your living room is, and I believe your wife looks after all of that, even if she is working.

 

DW:  That is your wife’s function?

 

Buhari: Yes, to look after me. 

DW: And she should stay out of politics? 

 

Buhari: I think so!
