Heartless Woman Runs Her Husband Over With an SUV Jeep After Argument

A 37-year old woman has been charged with first-degree murder for running her husband over with an SUV jeep.

A woman identified as Araceli Alvarez-Mendoza has been detained by the Police for intentionally running over her husband in Lanham, MD, Maryland, USA with her SUV on Sunday afternoon after an argument.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

The 37-year old suspect and her husband, Fernando Fragoso-Duana, 36, got into an argument at their home on the 9400 block of Worrell Avenue, according to Prince George's County police.

Fragoso-Duana then left the home and began walking in the neighbourhood.

Mendoza followed her husband in an SUV and intentionally ran him over with the vehicle, police say.

"She ran him over. I sat there and I watched her, she did that on purpose," a witness told News4.

She opened her front door to find the wrecked vehicle in her front yard, and said Mendoza stepped out of the SUV screaming. Mendoza then tried to pull her husband from underneath the vehicle to no avail.

A neighbour tried using a car jack to lift the car off of Duana.

Police arrived the scene and found Duana unresponsive underneath the SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Mendoza is charged with first-degree murder and has admitted her involvement in her husband's death, police said.

Boko Haram And ISIS To Take Libya And Attack The Vatican

On Monday, August 24, Nigeria warned the United States and other nations that the Islamist group, Boko Haram, has already dispatched the first of hundreds of its fighters to chaotic Libya to help the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in an effort to take control of that Arab country.

Boko Haram members from a re-branded video, in which the sect proclaimed itself the Islamic State in West Africa.

The jihadists are also making claims that they and their ISIS comrades may launch attacks on European cities, especially the Vatican.

The group, whose name translates to English as ‘Western education is a sin’, has deployed well over 200 troops with advanced weaponry to bolster ISIS’s forces in northern Africa, thereby affirming the claims of those who say there was a growing alliance between the two merciless groups.

According to Jeff Pierce, a former police department counter-terrorism unit commander, Boko Haram had initially sworn allegiance to the Yemeni-based al-Qaida group, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula. However, with the victories of ISIS in Iraq, Syria and other locations, it was not surprising to intelligence agents when Boko Haram decided it was time to join up with the Islamic State.

Fighters of ISIS who continued their battles in the Middle East, are now fighting to take control of Libya, which has been thriving in a bloody civil war since the fall of the dictator Colonel Moammar Gadaffi. The jihadists have continued their battle in Libya, because they believe that it is an excellent location from which to initiate an invasion to Europe.

Vincent Pollard, a former police counter-terrorism unit commander, says that with more new terrorists pouring into Libya to support ISIS, their leaders are bragging on social media websites that they will use their victory in that African nation to launch an invasion to Italy, perhaps attacking the home of the Roman Catholic Pope in the Vatican.

Pollard noted: “There are been threats made against Europe before, but now Isis leaders and their associates have taken to identifying their prized target: the Holy City in Rome,” said Pollard. “Isis has also created a series of illustrations and messages for the Internet including one that shows the black flag of Isis above the Vatican and the Catholic symbols replaced with Muslim designs and artwork.”

Abu el Gandal Barkawi, a man claiming to be a soldier of Allah, told ISIS’s supporters in a message on Twitter to “go to Rome through Libya.” The man also wrote: “The weapons of the Ottomans were launched and have surrounded Rome after conquering Libya to the south of Italy. Who wants to take Rome and Andalusia has to start from Libya.”

ISIS has sought the strengthening of its ties with Boko Haram in the recent months amid signs that its overstretched forces are beginning to be beaten back across the Middle East. In June, ISIS declared territory seized by Boko Haram in Nigeria as its West African province.

Jacob Zenn, a Nigerian counterterrorism expert, told the media in Africa that between 80 to 200 of the Boko Haram Islamists are currently fighting alongside the jihadists in the Libyan city of Sirte, which ISIS calls its capital in North Africa. The Nigerian government’s press office added: “There have been reports in recent times of some Nigerians departing to join terrorist groups especially in the Middle East and North Africa.”

Meanwhile, Chad has continued in its intensified effort to bring the insurgency of Boko Haram to an end. On Wednesday, August 26, 10 suspected Boko Haram members were tried in Chad, over their supposed roles in twin attacks that killed 38 people in the capital N’Djamena in June.

Bruno Mahouli, the city prosecutor general, said that the suspects are blamed for criminal conspiracy, killings, willful demolition with explosives, fraud, unlawful possessions of arms and ammunition, as well as using psychotropic substances.

The trial, which holds in a closed-door setting, is expected to continue for eight days, after which the accused will know their fate. One of those accused is Mahamat Mustapha, also known as Bana Fanaye, a Nigerian who, according to the Chadian government, was the brain behind the June 15 suicide blasts that affected a school and a police building in the Chadian capital, killing 38 people and leaving over 100 wounded.

500 Days After Chibok Girls Kidnap: Lagosians Protest

The Lagos state chapter of the #BringBackOurGirls group carried out a solidarity march to commemorate the disappearance of more than 200 girls that were abducted from their school by Boko Haram.

The girls were abducted on April 14, 2014 from their secondary school in Chibok, Borno state and have since then been in the captivity of the dreaded Islamist group.

The group numbering about 200 members and dressed in red began the march around 10: am on Thursday August, 27 from Allen Junction, Ikeja and marched to the governor’s office at Alausa. They carried placards and banners with inscriptions urging the government to make the rescue of the abducted Chibok girls a priority.

The head of the team, Mr. Samuel Omoniyi who spoke exclusively to Naij.com said the focus of the group was to drive the government to make the return of the girls a priority. He insisted that the assurance of President Muhammadu Buhari was not enough but actions were also needed to make the release of the girls from the clutches of Boko Haram a possibility.

Another top member of the group, Ayo Obe said the quest for the release of the girls was beyond any political motivation but a human driven thing. She said the previous government failed to ‘curb the whispering’ claiming that the girls were not abducted. She added that although the whereabouts of the girls was unknown, the group strongly hoped that the girls would one day return safely to their expectant parents.
Obe also condemned the tagging of the young girls who reportedly detonated explosives in the north as ‘Suicide bombers’. She said it was more appropriate to refer to them as ‘bomb carriers’ as they were compelled and brainwashed to do so.

The group was received by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode who promised to give his full support to the demand of the members. He said his government was committed to taking care of the refugees who fled the affected areas in the north to Lagos. He said President Buhari was also committed to getting the girls’ back as emphasized in his inaugural speech.

The governor said: “I sympathize with the parents (of the abducted girls) and understand how they feel. I am committed to their (refugees in Lagos) upkeep”.

Shocking! I Left Over N8Billion For Nyesom Wike – Amaechi

The immediate past governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has refuted claims by his successor, Nyesom Wike, that he left an empty treasury after his administration.

Mr. Amaechi was responding to claims by Opunabo Inko-Tariah, Mr. Wike’s Spokesperson, during a radio programme in Port Harcourt on Wednesday that his principal met an empty treasury when he took over government.

A total of N7.5 billion cash were left behind as balances in the State Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) account with Skye Bank, FAAC account with Zenith Bank, balances with Access Bank and funds in the State reserve fund account in First Bank,” Mr. Amaechi said in a statement by his media office, Thursday.

This is besides other balances in the state Government House account with Zenith Bank and other government MDA accounts, like the Bureau for Public Procurement (BPP).

By the time you pull all these together, we are looking at readily available cash in the region of eight to ten billion naira left for the Wike administration.”

Mr. Wike, who defeated who defeated Dakuku Peterside of Mr. Amaechi’s All Progressives Con‎gress, has consistently stated that he met an empty treasury upon assumption of office.

The governor belongs to the Peoples Democratic Party.

Last June, barely one month after taking over as governor, Mr. Wike had said that only one revenue account with Sterling Bank had some funds left by Mr. Amaechi’s administration.

I want to say on good authority that we did not meet N7 billion, as being speculated. The state’s FAAC account as at May 29 was in debit. That was the briefing I received from the Accountant-General,” Mr. Wike had said during a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the state government, Julius Berger Plc, and CCECC for the rehabilitation of 33 kilometre of roads in Port Harcourt.

In his statement on Thursday, Mr. Amaechi said that he did not only leave cash for his successor but also economic assets.

These assets that are scattered in diverse sectors of the economy were developed or built or procured with revenue that accrued to the state during Amaechi’s tenure,” the former governor said.

The assets belong to Rivers State, not Amaechi. Some of these assets are presently yielding revenue to the state coffers, and many can be easily and readily converted to cash, if the State so desires.

Mr. Amaechi further stated that it was “disingenuous and fraudulent” for Mr. Wike to claim that he met an empty treasury to justify the N30 billion loans he took within his first 30 days in office.

Rather than this puerile and silly distraction of always pointing accusing fingers at Amaechi, Wike should come out to explain to Rivers people what he took the loans for, account for and justify every kobo that has been spent from the loans.”

He Didn't Graduate, UNIPORT Disowns Lawmaker

A Lawmaker allegedly forged the University of Port Harcourt certificate with which he filled his INEC forms for the April 2015 elections.

According to the Vanguard reports, an official letter from the Registrar of the University of Port Harcourt to the National and State Assembly Election Tribunal sitting in Umuahia has disowned Mr. Emeka Nnamani representing Aba North State Constituency as a graduate of the school. The contents of the letter states Nnamani didn't graduate from the school.

In explicit terms, he allegedly forged the University of Port Harcourt certificate with which he filled his INEC forms for the April 2015 elections. And also, Nnamani was also alleged to still be a member of the PDP in his home State, Enugu while he contested the election on the platform of APGA in Abia State where he resides.

All these have been utilized by Dr. [Mrs.] Blessing Nwagba of the People's Democratic Party to challenge the election of Emeka Nnamani at the tribunal.

According to Chief K. C. Nwufo, SAN, lawyer to the petitioner, by allegedly being a member of two parties, Nnamani contravened the Electoral Act, arguing therefore that his election would not stand.

Nwufo also told the tribunal that the respondent told lies with regard to his educational qualification, alleging that he never graduated from the University of Port Harcourt as claimed. The Petitioner had closed her case.

In his submission, Chigozie Ogunji, counsel to Nnamani said that the respondent was ready to enter his defense and hinted that they have no less than 10 witnesses to give evidence.

The Tribunal Chairman has adjourned the matter to 24th and 27th of August for the respondent to begin his defense.

Enemies Within: Fayemi Deceived Tinubu

Ayodele Fayose, Ekiti state governor, has disclosed that his predecessor, Kayode Fayemi betrayed his party the APC and its national leader, Bola Tinubu who helped him to power.

The governor said this on August 20. Thursday by stating that his administration was devastating the legacies of huge debt, unpaid salaries, white giant projects, bad governance and corruption left behind by the APC-led administration of Kayode Fayemi, his predecessor.

Fayose, who was reacting to Fayemi’s interview in some newspapers in which the ex-governor said that “his legacy was being destroyed”, said no responsible administration will sustain a legacy of over N86 billion debt that was sustained on projects with no straight bearing on the welfare of the people.

In a statement issued by Lere Olayinka, Fayose’s media aide, the incumbent governor said it was essential for Fayemi’s negative legacies to be destroyed, and that “even in the APC, his legacy of betrayal of Senator Bola Tinubu, the man who made him governor is being destroyed.

“Today, Fayemi has been ostracised by those who assisted him to office because he has betrayed all of them, including Tinubu.

“Never again shall Ekiti be governed by those who will borrow billions of naira to plant flowers and create comfort for themselves alone,” Fayose declared.

“Does he then want us to sustain the legacy of serial betrayal of his benefactors?
“If he served Ekiti and its people well, why was it that he was roundly defeated in all the 16 local councils in the state in the 21 June, 2014 governorship election and his party was also defeated 16 to 0 in the presidential, National Assembly and House of Assembly elections?

“Even his own party men described his electoral defeat as the worst in Nigeria.”
Fayose questioned: “Did Fayemi leave behind any positive legacy in Ekiti?

“When Fayemi became governor, he chose to close down two universities established by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, government of Segun Oni and abandoned the Oba Adejugbe General Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, claiming that the state could not fund more than one university.

“The same Fayemi, who said Ekiti had no money to fund more than one university preferred to take N25 billion bond to plant flowers that never germinated up till now and build a new governor’s lodge, civic centre, pavilion and execute other irrelevant projects.

“Furniture alone, in the N3.3 billion governor’s lodge that he built for himself and his wife cost N604.9 million and Fayemi wants such legacy of profligacy to be sustained in Ekiti?

“We are sorry to tell him that we won’t sustain such legacy of waste.

“Even vehicles bought for traditional rulers and political appointees, his government did not pay and uncompleted Oba Adejugbe General Hospital and State Pavilion were commissioned with fanfare.
“Today, Ekiti State is under the yoke of debt, courtesy of Fayemi’s mismanagement of the state resources and what we are destroying are those legacies of mis-governance he left behind.

“One bad news that we must however tell Fayemi is that we won’t only destroy his legacy of misgovernance and betrayal in Ekiti, we will also make sure that economic devourers like him will never taste power in the state.”

It should be recalled that Fayemi was heavily criticized by Tinubu, stating that he was the reason the APC failed in Ekiti state because the ex-governor had no electoral value.

According to reports the tension between the two leaders dates back to the gubernatorial polls in Ekiti state, where Fayemi was defeated by Fayose.

Arsenal, Real Madrid Agree £48m Benzema Deal

Spanish team Real Madrid has accepted a bid from Arsenal for French hitman Karim Benzema.
That’s according to former English footballer and coach, Rodney Marsh, who claims the Gunners have had a £48m bid for the 27-year-old accepted by Los Blancos.

“I had a phone call from a mate of mine, and he’s been right on many things, and he said that he believes Real Madrid have accepted a bid somewhere in the region of £48million for Benzema from Arsenal,” Marsh told talkSPORT.

He added: “In the past this guy has always been right, he’s never been wrong yet, so we’ll have to wait and see.”

When asked on twitter by a fan if Benzema to Arsenal was a done deal? He said: “No, I said Real had accepted a bid from Arsenal.”

Atiku, El-Rufai In War Of Words Over NITEL Sale

A verbal feud has begun between a former vice president, Atiku Abubakar and the governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai, over the controversial Pentascope deal through which the federal government tried to privatise Nigeria’s telecoms carrier, the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL).

The two politicians have been throwing verbal missiles at each while also accusing each other of corruption in a deal many believed was fraught with corruption, Abusidiqu reports.

El-Rufai who was the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had in his book “The Accidental Public Servant”, shot the first jibe at Atiku suggesting that as chairman of the National Council on Privatization (NCP), he meddled in the privatisation of NITEL which ultimately truncated the process.
El-Rufai alleged that Atiku’s aggressiveness evidenced by his intrusion suggested that he had monetary interest in some of the deals.

However, Atiku who was entrusted with the responsibility of managing the privatization programme fired back saying that the former minister was bitter because a particular bidder, Motorola, lost out in one of the transactions.

According to The Punch, Atiku said: “the fact of the contract are like this: Obasanjo agreed with the NCP that the former BPE DG was wrong not to have disclosed his interest and that he had failed the test of transparency by not disclosing that his brother was on the board of Motorola.”

“You know, for instance, that it is a very serious offence to fail, refuse or neglect to disclose your interest whether directly or through someone else, in dealing with such an important transaction. But, the President in his wisdom decided that the contract be split into three, with each of the contenders, Motorola, Ericsson and the Chinese company – I think Huawei – taking a portion. As if to vindicate the NCP, by 2007 when we left office, the two others apart from Motorola had completed their own contracts. You can go and find out if they (Motorola) have finished,” he said.

The former vice president said that he would like Nigerians to be smart enough to read between the lines. He inquired why the former FCT minister treats the Motorola issue with such persistent personal bitterness and why he is making it a heavy matter.

Attiku said that anybody can play to the gallery and deceive the people. He noted that transparency is a key issue of conducting any business, including privatisation. “Conflict of interest is inconsistent with transparency,” he said.

“If you are a privatisation head and you have a relationship with a particular person connected with one of the companies making bids, it is a moral and legal duty to disclose that relationship or interest. Pretending that you have no relationship with the person who is rooting for a particular bidder is not altogether tidy and transparent. If he had no interest in a particular company for sentimental reasons, why is he making too much fuss about Motorola losing the bid?” Atiku pointed.

However, Atiku’s comment has sparked El-Rufai’s fury thereby coming out to fire on all cylinders, pointedly accusing the former vice president of manipulating the deal.

Muyiwa Adekeye, media advisor to El-Rufai said in a statement that:“It is understandable that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar would be enduring some unease at the disclosures made in ‘The Accidental Public Servant’, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai’s recent book.”

According to Adekeye, Atiku’s media team had made a vain effort to confuse Nigerians about his “serial interference with contract award processes” detailed in El-Rufai’s book, claiming in series of rebuttals that Atiku did not meddle in the privatisation processes. To him such claims are at variance with the substance of established facts that the former vice president used his position to seek contracts for friends.

In the statement, Adekele said: “now that Atiku himself has spoken on the controversial NITEL GSM contract involving Ericsson and Motorola, it is obvious that the attempt at confusing issues persists,” the statement said. It is untrue that the NITEL GSM contract in question was split. Rather it was awarded to Ericsson, but at the lower price submitted by Motorola, because of Atiku’s intense lobby and smears deployed to advance Ericsson’s bid. Atiku and Abdullahi Yari, his then ADC, at different times spoke to El-Rufai to favour Ericsson.”

He challenged Atiku to take up the “responsibility to explain why he became an Ericsson salesman, although the investigations conducted by Motorola after the debacle makes clear he was not engaged in an altruistic mission.”

Adekeye said that the incident had diplomatic repercussions, as the American government wrote to protest this loss by an American company that had submitted the cheaper bid.

On the one hand, Adekeye denied Atiku’s insistence that El-Rufai’s brother was a shareholder and member of Motorola’s board. On another hand, El-Rufai’s spokesman said on the issue of Pentascope that they see the same pattern of muddying the waters with falsehood. He pointed out that as chairman of the NCP, “Atiku gave his approval in writing on 21 February 2003 for the management contract with Pentascope to be signed.”

Mr Adekeye insisted that for the records, NITEL never made any huge profits as claimed by the Atiku camp, as it had never paid a single dividend to the Federal Government until the BPE compelled it to pay N3b in 2001.

Recently, El-Rufai had declared war on houses built on the land of the public institutions; yet, some of the owners of demolished buildings will be compensated.

NNPC to review production-sharing contracts, joint ventures

The new head of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp (NNPC) said on Sunday he will review all production-sharing contracts and joint venture agreements with its partners "to reflect current day realities in the global oil and gas industry".

Emmanuel Kachikwu, who was appointed two weeks ago to head the state oil company, which has been accused of corruption and mismanagement, said he would remit all crude oil proceeds due to the Nigerian government and plug all revenue leaks throughout the oil sector.

"The mandate ... is to turn around the entire commercial processes and procedures in order to impact on the growth trajectory and operations of the corporation," Kachikwu said in a statement.

The NNPC works alongside local and international oil majors such as Shell, Exxon, Chevron as well as global oil traders, including Trafigura, Vitol and Glencore.

President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Kachikwu, a former Exxon Mobil executive, with a brief to restructure the NNPC, which has been accused of failing to account for tens of billions of dollars in recent years.

The NNPC has not been publishing annual reports and its bookkeeping has been criticised as opaque, which appears to have allowed billions of dollars to disappear.

The Nigerian arm of global corruption watchdog EITI welcomed Kachikwu's restructuring of the NNPC. It recommended reforms should also focus on ensuring accurate measurement of crude and a review of pricing for expired legal agreements with oil companies.

Other areas for reform are the huge costs of fuel subsidies, crude oil swap and product-exchange agreements, repair of refineries, oil theft, review of the existing fiscal regime and acquisition and assignments of oil blocks by discretion, NEITI said in a statement.

Kachikwu said he had started a three-pronged restructuring of the NNPC that should lead to "a new NNPC", which he expects to emerge over the next five to six months.

He has already dismissed all of the company's executive directors, other top layers of management and cut the divisions by half, to four.

South African miners' body says cannot sign Solidarity pay deal

South Africa's Chamber of Mines, which negotiates with the trade unions on behalf of the industry's employers on pay, said on Monday it could not sign an agreement with the Solidarity union in the gold sector because the final offer was conditional on all unions accepting it.

Solidarity, which mostly represents skilled workers and supervisors, said earlier that it had accepted the offer for wage increases of between 4.8 and 6 percent for its members.

But a chamber spokeswoman said that it had "consistently made the point that its final offer was conditional on all four unions accepting such offer. No agreement can therefore exist between Solidarity and the Chamber."

The largest unions in the sector - the National Union of Mineworkers and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union - declared disputes with gold producers on Thursday after wage talks reached an impasse.

Their negotiations with the gold firms will now be handled by a government mediator, a necessary regulatory step before the union members can go on strike.

The talks are with Harmony Gold, AngloGold Ashanti Sibanye Gold and a smaller producer.

The positions of the two sides are wide apart, with the employers' complaining of falling prices and rising costs while the unions want big pay increases to close what they say is the "apartheid wage gap" - the disparities that persist between the black workforce and white management two decades after white rule ended.

APC says military has been effective under Buhari's leadership

The All Progressives Congress (APC), through its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, on Monday said that the military has become more effective in its fight against terrorists.

Mohammed said “now taking the battle straight to the insurgents, instead of waiting for them to attack.”

He added that the appointment of the new service chiefs boosted the morale of the rank and file of the Nigerian military.

He also commended the service chiefs for visiting the North-East to meet with the troops and community leaders.

The party further said that "The stepped-up fight against Boko Haram has convinced Nigerians that, indeed, their military is getting its groove back, and can beat the three-month deadline set by President Muhammadu Buhari for Boko Haram to be defeated."

Adding that “The renewed battle has also shown that President Buhari was right in directing the relocation of the military’s command and control centre from Abuja to Maiduguri."

Anambra prostitutes protest demolition of brothels

Commercial sex workers numbering over 2000 took over the streets of Awka, the Anambra State capital on Friday, August 14, protesting the demolition of over 50 brothels in the state by the Anambra State Urban Development Board (ASUDEB), thereby rendering them homeless and out of business.

The prostitutes were mad at the state government for ordering the sacking of their abodes at the popular cattle market at Amansea, in Awka North Local Government Area of the state, disrupting traffic and commercial activities.

According to reports, the angry harlots also set the remaining structures in the market on fire while accusing the ASUDEP officials of bias and high handedness.

The Board stormed the place some days earlier and brought down the several brothels dotting the area, the brothels were being used by kidnappers.

Speaking on their plight, the leader of the prostitutes who said her name was Racghael, accused the government officials of being wicked and inhuman as they 'destroyed their brothel without notice, leaving behind some huts, kiosks and canteens that belong to the Hausa cattle traders.'

But the General manager of the ASUDEP, Enemmuo Nathan Chinedu, said the exercise was part of the state chief executive, Governor Willie Obiano’s resolve to rid the state of all forms of crime and criminality, adding that the structures demolished were illegal buildings in Amansea Garriki where prostitutes, kidnappers and armed robbers reside.

“A lot of prostitutes live around Amansea cattle market, spoiling our children and constituting a nuisance in the area; and you know that anywhere there is brothel, criminals and kidnappers hover around there.

In my capacity as the ASUDEB GM, I will ensure that this doesn’t exist anymore in the state; and our activities are in line with our amiable governor’s policy on zero-tolerance to criminals and kidnappers in the State.”

Mourinho Is Inviting Chelsea Civil War With Terry's Axe

He may have regarded it as just one simple decision, but Jose Mourinho was left to rue the absence of his captain John Terry in the second half of Chelsea’s rout by Manchester City at the Etihad stadium yesterday, August 16.

Mourinho believed Terry was not up to the job of marking Chelsea’s nemesis on the night, Sergio Aguero, after the first 45 minutes of the game.

For him, a young and more agile defender in Kurt Zouma needed to be introduced into the game but the result of this change did more harm than good as City ended up putting two more goals past Chelsea’s goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in the 3-0 whitewash of the league champions.

What Mourinho failed to observe going into the dressing room after the half time whistle was that it was Gary Cahill whom Aguero was running rings around for the most part, having cleverly dummied the right-sided centre back before slotting past Begovic for City’s opener.

Never before had Mourinho substituted Terry since his return to Stamford Bridge in 2013. It was the first time Terry had been taken off by Mourinho, in his 177th game under the Portuguese.

Terry has been up against most of the world’s best forwards and few could be said to have given him a genuine run-around. Why suddenly did Mourinho think a younger, faster player would have to be fielded in the second half of last night’s game?

When asked about the substitution, Mourinho said: “The point was not to take John out, but to put Zouma in.

“I want to have my fastest player on the pitch and not on the bench. I know they are going to play counter attack and long balls to Aguero.”

Asked Why Terry and not Cahill, he said: “That is a good question. Why not start Zouma in the first place?”

A football enthusiast will not be new to Mourinho’s mulishness. For the “Special One”, the decision to replace Terry was vindicated in that Chelsea had most of the play after the break, but for disappointed fans, the Portuguese got his tactics wrong this time.

Mourinho though, had found himself another scapegoat in Terry, just like Petr Cech, Juan Mata and others players whose usefulness to Chelsea and Mourinho expired. He has ushered a good number of Chelsea legends out of the door in the three summers he has been back at the club, with Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard among them too.

Terry’s doggedness is certainly a major reason why the skipper is still in London. Mourinho, however, thinks otherwise: he believes he revived Terry’s career at Chelsea.

Irked at a question, Mourinho said: “I don’t know if you ask many questions to Benitez, Andre Villas-Boas, Di Matteo, to the ones that never played him (Terry).

“I am the one you shouldn’t ask because I am the one who played John every game, made him captain, recovered him from a difficult situation with other managers and I had the right to say I want Zouma on the pitch.”

“He was not dancing in the dressing room and he was not having a bad reaction when he took delivery of the news that he was to be subbed.

“He did what everybody does. The manager says this guy comes in and that guy goes out and they all understand.”

A 2-2 draw against Swansea and this 3-0 hammering leaves Mourinho’s men five points behind City.

It is strange for Mourinho to endure such a poor start. In his career he has never been at a club whose output was so shambolic. He has a job on his hands turning this lot around any time soon.

No player is bigger than any club but for a player like John Terry, with 20 years at a club, his input has done more than most to challenge that thinking.

Mourinho has not yet been able to bring in the players he wants but the signing of Abdul Baba Rahman could yet spell trouble for either Cahill or Ivanovic.

“He is a left back he can compete with Azpilicueta,” said Mourinho before adding: “At the same time Azpilicueta can compete with Ivanovic for the right-back poitison so he replaces Filipe Luis in the balance of the squad.”

The Chelsea manager has also been accused of trying to send a defiant message to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich with his controversial decision to substitute John Terry at half-time at Manchester City on Sunday.

Mourinho is keen to sign John Stones from Everton – although the Merseyside club are adamant the player is not for sale – and his decision to remove Terry after 45 minutes at the Etihad Stadium has prompted suggestions he was attempting to provoke Abramovich into action in the transfer market.

He was asked at the end of the press conference whether these players could win him the Premier League again and maybe the Champions League. “Yes,” he said quickly and walked away as he could not think of any convincing words to back it up.

To endure such a start and fall out with his medical staff and then drop his captain at half time of a crucial league game is peculiar. Something is not right for Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, Mourinho slammed his defenders for allowing Manchester City to score two cheap second half goals in their second match of the English Premier League.

Jonathan to Buhari: I am ready for probe
ABUJA — The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday, faulted what it described as a massive campaign to stop the recovery of an estimated N13.972 trillion allegedly squandered by the immediate past administration.

The N13.972trn as computed by Vanguard was the summation of funds allegedly unaccounted for, withheld or allegedly stolen mostly from the oil sector.
The party said in a statement, yesterday, that the campaign to stop the recovery of the funds would be a total disservice to probity and public decency.
The APC’s assertion was immediately rebuffed by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which described the APC claim as reckless, irresponsible and highly provocative.

The PDP said APC’s display of imaginary figures was a desperate effort by the ruling party to achieve a heinous agenda against the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The PDP also yesterday, appealed to Nigerians and the international community to appeal to President Muhaamdu Buhari to guard against what the party claimed as the seeming determination of the government to derail the country’s democracy. Citing what it claimed was an attempt to stifle democratic institutions, the opposition party said that Buhari was showing himself not to be a born again democrat as he had earlier claimed.

The APC which described as mind-boggling, the massive looting of the nation’s treasury by public officials during the Jonathan administration, vowed that nothing but the total recovery of the funds will be acceptable to patriotic Nigerians.

The APC reaction followed commentaries at the weekend that trailed the assertion by the National Peace Committee for caution in the war against graft. Besides, a member of the committee, Bishop Matthew Kukah was also quoted last week as calling on the administration not to focus on a probe of the Jonathan administration.

In a statement issued in Lagos, yesterday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said anyone who attempts, either by deeds or words, to sabotage the recovery efforts is not a patriot and deserves nothing but public opprobrium.

Narrating some of the funds allegedly stolen or unaccounted for during the Jonathan administration, the APC said:

*3.8 trillion Naira out of the 8.1 trillion Naira earned from crude oil (2012-2015) withheld by NNPC

*2.1 billion US dollars (N413.7 billion) from Excess Crude Account unaccounted for
*Department of Petroleum Resources’ unremitted 109.7 billion Naira royalty from oil firms
*6 billion US dollars (N1.182 trillion) allegedly looted by some ministers of the last administration
*160 billion barrels of crude worth 13.9 billion US dollars (N2.7383) lost between 2009 and 2012
*15 million US dollars (N2.955 trillion) from botched arms deal yet to be returned to Nigeria
*13 billion US dollars (N2.561 trillion) in NLNG dividends mostly unaccounted for
*30 billion Naira rice waiver

*183 billion naira  unaccounted for at the NDDC

Tip of the iceberg
Remarkably, the APC said the above listed ‘missing’ funds constituted just a tip of the iceberg since they are mostly from a few sectors of the economy, mostly the oil sector, and were discovered even before the forensic audit now being undertaken in some key areas.

Saying that the present administration cannot turn a blind eye to such, the APC said:  “It is absolutely gratifying that Nigerians are vehemently opposed to the few who would rather have the government of the day turn a blind eye to the looted funds and, in their words, carry on with the process of governance.
“Truly, what sort of governance can go on if the billions of Naira in a few hands are not recovered? In the first instance, the government needs every kobo of the funds it can muster to bring about the change it has promised Nigerians. Secondly, leaving such hair-raising funds in the hands of the few looters is dangerous, because they can use the funds to destabilize any government. In fact, no one will be surprised if the looters use their dirty funds to sponsor public demonstrations against the government’s determination to recover the funds.

“Thirdly, allowing those who privatized the commonwealth to get away is offering a thumbs-up for looting. No responsible government will do that,” APC said.

The party said that already, the looters have embarked on a relentless and an increasingly-bold campaign to discredit the government of the day and sabotage the funds’ recovery process, using newspaper columnists, ‘talking heads’ and otherwise respectable opinion leaders.

“They and their paid hirelings have tried to employ sophistry to muddle the waters, but Nigerians are much wiser, and will not succumb to the dirty antics of the looters’ megaphones,” it said.

APC said it is necessary to remind Nigerians of the kind of massive looting of the treasury that took place in the past few years, so they can better appreciate the seriousness of the issue at stake. It, therefore, listed some instances of the looting as follows:  “The level of looting that went on in other sectors is better imagined, hence the need for all Nigerians to rally around the Buhari Administration to recover the loots, bring the looters to justice and to put in place measures to prevent such looting in the future,” it said.
It’s all lies — PDP

In its response yesterday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, described the claims by the APC as a desperate attempt by the APC to get public approval.

The PDP said: “In trying to escalate their stock-in-trade of lies, wild allegations and falsehood, the APC failed to understand that their baseless fabrications are capable of throwing an unsuspecting nation into chaos.

“The spate of fabrications by Lai Mohammed has become a sickening source of worry for well-meaning Nigerians, including those in his party.”

The PDP, therefore, called on President Buhari and the APC as a party, to call their spokesman to order before “he plunges the country into crisis with wild and unsubstantiated claims.”

The PDP said instead of engaging in unnecessary playing to the gallery, the APC-led government should get serious with the fight against corruption by investigating and prosecuting corrupt persons, while moving on with the demands of governance, especially in fulfilling their numerous campaign promises for which they were voted into office at the centre.
The PDP in another statement accused the APC-led government of aiming to undermine the critical democratic institutions and notably, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC which it said had now been laid constitutionally prostrate on account of lack of a quorum.

Metuh said despite claims of being a converted democrat,n President Buhari has allowed, under his watch, an incessant violation of sections of the nation’s constitution, a development that has become a huge threat to democracy and the stability of the nation.
“For instance, how can this government explain the fact that a major institution of democracy like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been deliberately debilitated to the extent that it can no longer perform its statutory responsibility for lack of quorum?

“Nigerians are aware that before his tenure expired on June 30, the former INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega wrote to President Buhari, intimating him of the fact that the tenure of majority of the national commissioners will expire before August, yet the President never acted, resulting in the present crisis in the commission, where more than 80% out of the statutory 13 members remain vacant, even as 11 states of the federation are also without Resident Electoral Commissioners.
“We note that this anomaly is in addition to the uncertainty surrounding the controversial appointment of an Acting Chairman of INEC in the person of a national commissioner whose tenure has since expired, not minding that there is no provision for an acting chairman of INEC in our constitution.

“This development has completely enervated the commission from carrying out its functions as stipulated in part 1 of 3rd schedule of the 1999 constitution as amended, thereby putting our electoral system under severe threat.

“We ask, if not for a possibility of an ulterior motive to inject a constitutional crisis and undermine the nation’s democracy, why should President Buhari wait to be urged before he upholds his responsibility of forwarding replacements to the Senate for confirmation so as to enable the commission effectively carry out its constitutional responsibilities to the nation? ”

“Could this be a ploy by the APC-led government to use a decapitated INEC to conduct the forthcoming governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa to pave way for their planned ‘capture’ of the two PDP states?
“Is the weakening of INEC not part of the plot to use the commission to put the PDP in precarious position in various electoral tribunals to the advantage of the APC?

The PDP also faulted the administration’s failure to constitute a cabinet and what it cited as the repeated attacks on the “revered national

leaders in the National Peace Committee, which has as members, former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, respected clerics; Archbishop John
Onaiyekan and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kuka, retired justices of superior records as well as others highly respected patriotic Nigerians, for daring to counsel Buhari’s government on some observed undemocratic tendencies and processes.

“The crass attacks are more astonishing, considering the much appreciated role these great Nigerians played in ensuring a peaceful and violence free 2015 general elections.

“This is especially as we have no reason to believe that such weighty attacks from the President’s party can come without his approval, more so as the APC spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who authored the statements was not part of the meeting between the President and the Peace Committee.

Noting that the party is not against the anti-graft war, the party called on its former members now in the APC who were groomed in democratic ethos while in the PDP to nudge their new party towards good manners.
“We call on some well-meaning Nigerians who have found themselves in the APC, especially, those who at one time or the other, were pupils of the teachings and visions of the founding fathers of the

PDP, to rise above the shallowness of their temporary enclave and join in this major defence of democratic ethos”.

11 in Intense Race to Succeed Former INEC Boss, Jega... See the List of Candidates

The race to fill the shoes of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission has commenced and no fewer than 11 candidates have been speculated to be in the running.

As the tenure of more officials of the Independent National Electoral Commision expires, the Presidency is shopping for credible candidates as INEC chairman and RECs.
The Nation reports that fewer than 10 candidates are jostling to be chairman.
Some of those being speculated are: Mrs. Zakari; two former National Commissioners (Lai Olurode and Nuru Yakubu); the Director-General of INEC Electoral Institute, Prof. Abubakar Momoh; Mr. Festus Okoye ( a human rights activist); Mr. Mike Igini and three unnamed candidates.
A retired Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Muhammadu Uwais, who was the chairman of an Electoral Reform Committee raised by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, has been suggested for the job, but there is a snag in his age.
The top contender for the coveted seat is Mrs. Zakari, a princess of Hadejia, Kano State in the Northwest.
Besides coming from the same geopolitical zone with Jega, Mrs. Zakari is the first woman vying for the Chief Electoral Officer.
It was laernt that there were issues on whether or not the President should appoint the INEC chairman from the North or the South.
The last occupant of the office, Prof. Attahiru Jega, came from Kebbi State in the Northwest.
The North-South dichotomy has placed a burden on the Presidency and made the race to succeed Jega keener, The Nation learnt.

I'm Richer Than Bill Gates - Redeem Church's Pastor Adeboye Reveals

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said to his congregation during a programme that he is richer than one of the world's richest men, Bill Gates.

Teaching the worshippers in the mission during the church’s 63rd Annual Convention on Saturday shortly before the Holy Communion Service on the topic; “Overflowing Cup,” Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said that he is richer than one of the world’s richest men, Bill Gates.

Pastor Adeboye said that if Bill Gates needs shoes, he would have to go to the market to buy them, but that if he should announce that he needs shoes at the Redemption Camp, where the convention took place, the auditorium might not contain the shoes people would donate to him.
“I have houses in at least 188 countries of the world, where we have our churches, so I am richer than Bill Gates. Each time I visit these countries, my children would be struggling and saying ‘daddy, come and stay with me.

If I announce here that tomorrow morning, I need a car to travel to the new auditorium, how many cars do you think would be made available to me by you my children? Those of you that do not have a car of your own, very soon, God will give you your own cars. So, I am appealing to you to become an incurable soul winner before you leave this convention ground and your cup will overflow,” he said.
