Boko Haram: UNIMAID Suffer another Suicide Bombing attack

Security operatives have dealt with three deadly suicide bombers who attacked a hostel at the University of Maiduguri on Friday.

Three male suicide bombers on Friday attacked the students’ hostel of the University of Maiduguri. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the attack was, however, repelled by security operatives at the University.

 

An eye witness, who pleaded anonymity, said the suicide bombers attacked the new male hostel block (A) of the institution. He said the attackers entered the hostel in spite of the trenches dug to fortify the security of the school. He said two of the bombers detonated their explosives and blew up themselves.

 

According to him, the third one was shot down by security men while trying to flee the scene of the attack.

“The attack came at a time when students are on vacation. Only the suicide bombers were killed but they caused damage to the building,” he eye witness said.

 

The Public Relations Officer of the Borno Police Command, ASP Victor Isuzu, confirmed the incident. Isuzu, however, said the command had neutralised two suicide bombers before they entered the university. He said security men shot dead the bombers before they crossed the university’s fence.

 

He said the command had deployed additional personnel to beef up security at the institution.

Nigerian Troops Kill 5 Suspected Boko Haram Terrorists

Troops waging war against Boko Haram have killed five suspected terrorists in Mussini village, Borno State.

The Boko Haram sect members were shot when they tried to steal some food items from the village.

According to Daily Post, troops of 3 Battalion, 22 Brigade ambushed the sect members after receiving a tip-off.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, in a statement, said “Weapons recovered from the insurgents were one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine, three rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, 27 bicycles, 10 machetes and one dagger.”

Meanwhile, four female suicide bombers detonated their bombs after they were detected by vigilante members at a border town near Cameroon.

CNN is reporting that a number of Boko Haram commanders were freed as part of Thursday's release of 21 Chibok schoolgirls which have been in captivity for almost 2 years. 

Conflicting information is emerging about what Boko Haram received in exchange for releasing 21 Chibok schoolgirls in Nigeria this week after holding them for two years.

 

"A number of Boko Haram commanders" were freed as part of Thursday's release of the girls, a source close to the negotiations between the Islamist militant group and the Nigerian government said on condition of anonymity.

 

This contrasts with what the Nigerian government has said, which is that the girls' release was not a prisoner exchange.

 

"This was not a swap," Nigerian Information Minister Alhaji Lai Mohammed said Thursday. "It is a release, the product of painstaking negotiations and trust on both sides."

 

A separate source, one with direct knowledge about the girls' release, told CNN Thursday that no captive Boko Haram fighters were released in exchange for the girls.

 

The 21 that Boko Haram released Thursday were among the 276 girls and women, ages 16 to 18, that militants herded from bed in the middle of the night at a boarding school in Chibok, Nigeria, in April 2014 - a kidnapping that spurred global outrage.

Osibanjo Lied Again! Blames Jonathan for Boko Haram Insurgency

The Vice President of Nigeria - Professor Yemi Osinbajo has linked the strength of Boko Haram to the previous administration of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. 

The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has blamed failure of the immediate past government to provide equipment and supplies to the military for the spread of Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East

 

It would be recalled that Boko Haram gathered momentum under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan under which about 217 Chibok girls were kidnapped by the sect.
 

Osinbajo made the statement on Thursday at the graduation of Cadets of 63rd Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna.

Mr. Osinbajo, who was the special guest at the graduation, said that the failure resulted to the death of over 20, 000 people with over two million displaced and more than 75, 000 children orphaned.

He expressed regret that several billions of dollars meant for procurement of arms and ammunition to prosecute the war were cornered by few persons.

“This has left the region with one of the worst humanitarian crisis,” he added.

The VP commended the military for defeating the terrorists and for the sacrifices it made to defend the nation. He said that the fastest way for Nigeria to get out of the current recession was for militant groups in the Niger Delta to stop bombing oil pipelines.

He said that the activities of the militants had adversely affected crude oil output which had dropped from 2.2 million barrels per day to below 1 million barrels per day.

Mr. Osinbajo said the destruction had also affected the revenue accruing to the country by 60 per cent. While comparing the 2008/2009 recession in United States with Nigeria’s, the VP said Nigeria’s recession was caused by massive corruption, lack of saving and destruction of oil pipelines.

Not 'Technically Defeated'! Boko Haram Hoist Flag in Three Villages

A security source has told BBC Africa that Boko Haram has hoisted its flag in three villages in the north-eastern part of the country after over-running them. 

Nigeria's militant Islamist group Boko Haram has hoisted its flag in three villages in the north-east after over-running them yesterday, a security source has said. 

 

The militants slaughtered at least eight people, including a village elder, during the attack, the security source and residents said. 

 

The villages - Kubirivour, Boftari and Kuburmbalah - are near Chibok town, from where the militants captured more than 200 schoolgirls in 2014. 

 

Others sources said the militants were still in control of Malam Fatori town, on the Nigeria-Niger border. 

 

Last Sunday, Nigerian troops recaptured the town from the jihadists. However, the militants reinforced their ranks and regained control of the town.

In the latest issue of an ISIS magazine, the former spokesman for Boko Haram, Abu Musab al-Barnawi, has been named as the new leader replacing Abubakar Shekau.

"The so-called Islamic State (IS) jihadist group has announced a new leader for its West African branch, popularly known as Boko Haram. 

"The latest issue of an IS magazine featured what it called its first interview with Abu Musab al-Barnawi, who replaces the eccentric Abubakar Shekau. 

"In a video clip released in January 2015, Mr al-Barnawi described himself as the spokesman for Boko Haram. This was before the Nigeria-based jihadist group pledged allegiance to IS. 

"Now IS says he has replaced Mr Shekau, who has not made a verified appearance in propaganda production since August 2015."
