Three South African ex-police officers deported from Ghana

The three retired South African police officers who were arrested in the Central Region for allegedly engaging in activities with national security implications have been deported.

They were put on board South African Airways flight number 210, which departed around 9:26 to Johannesburg.

Their entry visas have been revoked by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).
Officials from the GIS and security details from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), escorted the three to the aircraft, which was yet to be boarded by other passengers.

Graphic Online witnessed the scene as the three were made to board the aircraft around 8:29 am. They were not handcuffed and had no security escort from Ghana.

According to security sources, South African officials would meet the three on arrival.

The three — Major Ahmed Shaik Hazis (retd), 54; Warrant Officer Denver Dwayhe, 33, and Captain Mlungiseli Jokani, 45 — were arrested at the EL-Capitano Hotel where they had been based since arriving in Ghana.

They were said to be training 15 young men in various security drills, including unarmed combat, weapon handling, VIP protection techniques and rapid response exercises.

Bail

The three were granted bail on March 24, 2016, but officials of the BNI whisked the three away amidst protest from their lawyers, who viewed the act as an abuse of the rights of the accused persons.

The three were each granted a Gh?20,000 bail with one surety when they were arraigned at the Accra Circuit Court on March 24, 2016.

Lawyers of the accused persons raised legal issues with the continuous incarceration of the three and indicated their intent to file the necessary legal papers in court to secure their release.

Court appearance

A team of seven lawyers, led by Mr Ellis Owusu Fordjour and Mr Samuel Atta Akyea represented the three South Africans.

They were each charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful training and making false declaration. They pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The prosecution prayed the court to remand the accused persons since investigations were ongoing but lawyers for the accused persons garnered legal arguments to justify why the three should be granted bail.

The prosecution, led by Superintendent Francis Baah had wanted the accused persons to be remanded but the defence lawyers raised objections and said the offences for which the three were being held were bailable.

The court presided over by Mrs Patricia Quansah granted the accused persons bail. The case was then adjourned to April 12, 2016.

The court ordered that the passports of the accused persons should be deposited with the Registrar of the court and that the sureties were to provide photo identity cards to satisfy the bail conditions.

#Buharimeter! More Investors Withdraw from Nigeria Amidst Economic Crisis

More investors are reportedly parting ways with Nigeria following the unfavourable economy which has led to losses on the part of the businessmen.

There is strong indication that foreign investors who used to transact larger percentage of activities in the Nigerian stock market have been withdrawing their investments from the market.

Many analysts attributed the foreign investors' actions to unfavourable condition of foreign exchange currency.

Foreign investors who used to dominate trading in the Nigerian stock market transacted 51.57 per cent of total market activities in January 2016, down to 36.48 per cent at the end of February trading.

According to the Nigerian Stock Exchange polls trading figures from major custodians and market operators on their Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) flows for the month of February, foreign investors withdrew N31.84 billion during the month against N10.94 billion invested in Nigeria market.

The percentage of transactions of foreign investors in February was 36.48 per cent compared to 74.49 per cent of domestic investors.

Total transaction on the bourse during the month stood at N117.27 billion as against N184.49 billion total transaction carried out in January.

#CorruptionAndBuhari! How Aisha Buhari, Others Bought Dollars From CBN And Resold for Profit

The Peoples Democratic Party has courted controversy after it made hefty allegations against the President, his wife and many others in his administration.

The Peoples Democratic Party has leveled allegations of cheating, fraud and stealing on president Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha Buhari, Shehu Garba and many others as it accused them of using the Central Bank to make profits. In a number of tweets using the official twitter handle @PdpNigeriaOfficial, the party alleged that "In 7 months, president Buhari has withdrawn $23m forex from CBN for foreign travel expenses and estacode."

It also said that "First Lady Aisha Buhari got $22m forex from CBN on the instructions of Emefiele and the company sold at N362 same day. " and accused Garba Shehu that he "got $800,000 forex at N185 from CBN on the instructions of Emefiele, CBN governor and sold at N350 on the same day."

he allegations are not just hefty but something worrisome.

Tinubu blasts NNPC Kachikwu over Buhari’s non-performing government

* Your flippancy is out-of-line

• You do not own NNPC

• You’re bad advertisement for APC govt

*Petrol shortage sours Easter celebrations

• NLC calls for minister’s resignation

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has condemned comments by the Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu “that he (Kachikwu) was not trained as a magician and that basically Nigerians should count themselves fortunate that the NNPC under his stewardship has been able to bring in the amount of petrol fuel it is currently doing.
In a statement sent to The Guardian, and titled, ‘Kachikwu Needs To Know That Respect And Good Performance Will Do What Magic Cannot’, the former Lagos State Governor insisted he is “an avid and partisan supporter” of the President Buhari-led government and of the progressive policies of the APC.
With that, Tinubu said he reserves “the right and the duty as a Nigerian to voice my opinion when I believe a member of this government has strayed from the progressive calling required of this administration. I do this because my greater devotion and love are for this nation and its people. Party and politics fall secondary.”
He said: “Perhaps the statement by Kachikwu was made in a moment of unguarded frustration or was an awkward attempt at a joke. Whatever the motive, it was untimely and off-putting. The remark did not sit well with the Nigerian people; they were as right to feel insulted, as the Minister was wrong to have said such a thing. The fuel shortage is severely biting for the average person. They are forced to remain in lines far too long, for too much time, to pay too much money for too little fuel. This is no joking matter. Livelihoods and people’s welfare are at stake. With so much on the line, Kachikwu’s flippancy was out-of-line. He was basically telling Nigerians that they should be lucky that they are getting the inadequate supply they now suffer and that they should just be quiet and endure the shortage for several weeks more.
“Kachikwu’s intervention was unhelpful. It panicked and disappointed the public as to the duration of the crisis. It insulted the people by its tonality. He spoke with the imperious nature of a member of the elitist government the people voted out last year and not the progressive one they voted in. Kachikwu must be reminded that he was not coerced to take this job. He accepted the job and its responsibilities knowingly. He also must remember that he does not own NNPC. This also is not a private company that owes nothing to the public except the duty of fair dealing.
“He is a public servant. The seat he sits upon is owned by Nigerians, not by him. The company he runs is owned by Nigerians, not by him. They are his boss. He is not theirs. Power is vested in the people. He is a mere custodian or agent of their will. In talking to us in such a manner, he committed an act of insubordination. If he had talked so cavalierly to his boss in the private sector, he would have been reprimanded or worse. If wise, the man should refrain from such interjections in the future.
“As his ultimate bosses, the people have a right to demand the requisite performance and respect from him. He should apologise for treating them so lightly in this instance.
“His portfolio being a strategically important one, he needs to reestablish the correct relationship with the public. They no longer feel he is working for their optimal benefit as their servant. Instead, he seems to be standing above them, telling them to take it or leave it. For his policies and stint in office to be successful and a help to this government, he must have the support and belief of the people at this tough time. He must talk to them in a way that they believe he seeks their best interest and understands the hardship weighing upon them. He must ask them to work with him and perhaps to endure a bit longer but with the knowledge that he is working to resolve this matter as fast as he can and as permanently as possible. That he is dedicated to the position that once these current lines are gone that never again shall they reappear, as long as he has any influence in the matter.
“To do this, requires no magic or training in that strange craft. It requires empathy, compassion and the willpower to forge a better Nigeria. These must be the common trademarks of those serving in a progressive government, for these attributes are integral parts of the spirit and ideals upon which the APC was founded. Upon such notions was this administration voted into office by the Nigerian people in the operation of their sovereign will to seek a national leadership that would pursue their interests to the utmost and give them every fair chance to live in a better Nigeria.
“Even though times are hard, we must all realise that they would be even harder and much darker had we allowed the venal, kleptocracy of the PDP to continue to lord over the land solely for their selfish benefit and not for the common good.
“I am confident that President Buhari and this government can resolve the issues that press us. From establishing full security and safety to staking a claim to true economic prosperity and fairness, this government shall salvage our national pride and purpose.
Let all of us, in and out, of government never forget this. If we adhere to this remembrance, we shall see that magic will not be needed to bring the progress we seek.”
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Issa Aremu, also criticised Kachikwu over comments by the latter that it is cheaper for the nation to import fuel from overseas than refine it locally.
“We condemn it and call on him to withdraw this unhelpful statement, failing which we demand he should resign,” said Aremu, who noted “with regret that Nigeria spends as much as $10bn yearly on importation of petroleum products.”
Delivering a communiqué at the 11th delegates’ conference of the National Union of Textile, Garments and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) in Kaduna, Aremu stressed: “I see no reason why Nigeria cannot build a modern refinery that will improve petroleum capacity,” adding that continuous importation is the agenda of a cabal whose desire is self gratification rather than the welfare of the masses.
The expectations of many Nigerians for a stress free Easter celebration, meanwhile, have been dashed by the ongoing fuel scarcity, which in the last 24 hours took a turn for the worse.
In many parts of the country, the very few stations that sold Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), yesterday, were attended by long queues, as frustrated buyers struggled to get the costly product ahead today’s festivities.
In Kaduna, many motorists were forced to patronise black market dealers at exorbitant prices, as few fuel stations had the product. At the independent filling stations along Kachia, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Junction Roads long queues of motorists was the order of the day, as a litre was sold for N145-N155.
Major marketers, like Mobil along Independence Way and Total at Ahmadu Bello Way, sold the product at the official price of N86 per litre. On the queues at both stations, however, were motorists, like Mallam Yinusa Abbas, who told The Guardian he had been waiting patiently for two days.
A well-intentioned directive of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence (NSCDC) unwittingly compounded the scarcity in Bauchi. The outfit had threatened to arrest and prosecute unscrupulous filling station operators and roadside sellers.
Armed with their money, would-be buyers are still not able to lay their hands on the product, as sellers have gone underground. Consequently, a four-litre gallon, which used to be N500-600, now sells for N1,100-N1,200.
In Gombe State, black marketers are selling the product for N250 per litre, while filling stations are dispensing at N170, amid buyers’ uncertainty over the genuineness of the commodity. Fares, meanwhile, have gone up. A trip from Gombe to Bauchi, formerly N800, has climbed up to N1000. Gombe to Bajoga, which used to be N250 is now N500.
Some marketers who spoke to The Guardian in Port Harcourt disproved claim by officials of the Department of Petroleum Resources that most filling stations have fuel but are refusing to sell it. The marketers explained that they purchased their product from independent depots; hence the DPR should not expect them to sell at the official price.
At fillings stations in Eleme, Rumuokoro, Rumuodumaya, Rukpokwu, Eliozu, Omoku, Ahoada, old Port Harcourt and Worji, a litre of petrol was sold being for N150 and above.
Four litres of petrol in Kano yesterday was sold for N800-N900, as black marketers took advantage of the scarcity to multiply profit.
The stations of many major and independent marketers in the metropolis were locked up. And at the few stations that sold, the queues were long.
The chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) in Kano, Alhaji Bashir Dan Mallam, blamed the scarcity on failure of the NNPC to supply the product to Kano...

Buhari Explains His 'Islamization Agenda'

The presidency has played down the fears of the Nigerian Christians that the country is on the verge of being islamized as insinuated by prominent religious leaders.

The senior special assistant President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Mr Garba Shehu has spoken on the reason why Buhari added Nigeria to the Islamic Coalition against Terrorism.

Buhari's decision has generated a lot of furore amongst Nigerians, with many accusing the president of wanting to turn the country into an Islamic nation.

”With the rise of the Boko Haram terrorist group of the past few years, Nigeria faces a threat such as no other in its entire history and existence. Desperate times require desperate, unusual, measures.” Shehu wrote in a statement.

He cited the fact that that President Buhari accepted the offer of assistance from G7 countries from the West at the commencement of his administration, adding that religion was not a consideration then.

He wondered why religion is now an issue as the president decided to embrace help in fighting terror from the Middle-East region.

"The safety of Nigerians and the total annihilation of Boko Haram is of more important than the unfounded worries of Nigeria’s so-called Islamisation.

"Our Commander-in-Chief has sought help where he believes our country will benefit and the religious affiliation or ideology of our benefactors should not be the paramount consideration.

"The fears that our country’s membership in this coalition will draw Islamic State, ISIS’s attention to Nigeria are too late,”
he said.

As the president has repeatedly maintained, it is Boko Haram that proclaimed allegiance to ISIS, thereby dragging us into the global terrorism network, part of the statement read.

Jonathan was Very Significant in my Billionnaire Status: Aliko Dangote

Nigerian billionaire and business mogul, Aliko Dangote has revealed his benefits from the 6-year rulership of former president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who was defeated in the election by the current administration.
The man Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will forever remain significant in the life of one of the most successful businessmen in the world, Aliko Dangote due to the enabling ground he created for his business to strive while the former was president.

This is a throwback report which took place in September, 2013 concerning the economic achievements of Jonathan which has faded away in the hearts of some Nigerians due to insinuations of massive corruption, youth unemployment, Boko Haram insurgency amongst others during his administration.

Aliko Dangote once said that his achievements as the richest man in Africa and 25th richest man on earth were attributable to the favourable policies of the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Dangote disclosed this in Nairobi when the former President Goodluck Jonathan met with the Nigerian community in Kenya in the month of September 2013 while the later was still in power.

The meeting was part of the activities lined up for the three-day visit of President Jonathan to Kenya.

Dangote, who was on the entourage of the president to Kenya, told the gathering that Jonathan had done a lot to improve the business climate in Nigeria.

“I want to tell you what the president has been doing in Nigeria. He is very humble and may not want to sing about what he has been doing.

“I will tell you what he has been doing to Nigerians and to some of us who are in business in Nigeria. We are very grateful for some of the policies he has introduced.

“As you all know, without good policies of government, there is no way a person like me from a big town like Kano can rise from a humble beginning to become the 25th richest person on earth.

“Without the policies of the president and also making sure that there is consistency in the policies of the government, this could not have happened,”
he said.

Stop Complaining! Jonathan Left You $30bn - Obasanjo Tells Buhari

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that the global oil price as at the time he became president was much lower than it is now, hence the need for the current administration to still find a breakthrough in making economic advances.

Speaking during an exclusive interview with an Online platform, Frisky Larr, former President Olusegun Obasanjo said he met a worse situation in the global price of crude oil when he took power in 1999, but made the best of it.

He however reminded Buhari that unlike his administration that met a paltry $3.7 billion in the coffers, Goodluck Jonathan left behind a whooping $30 billion.

He was quoted as saying, "When I assumed office in 1999, I inherited $3.7 billion in reserve, while Buhari met $30 billion, almost 10 times of what I met then, and the price of oil then was $9. When it got to $20, I was dancing.

"I know the price is down now and with time, it will jump up again. What Buhari is doing currently is preparing ground for Nigeria to take advantage when it goes up again."

According to Justice Abdul Kafarati, he was forced to abandon the trial because his integrity was called into question.

Federal High Court judge, Justice Abdul Kafarati has announced his withdrawal from Senate President, Bukola Saraki’s corruption case.

According to Kafarati, he was forced to abandon the trial because his integrity was called into question.

Online platform, Sahara Reporters had earlier accused the judge of delivering “cash and carry” judgments among other things.

“It is only in this country that people can wake up and start calling people names,” Kafarati said according to The Cable.

“In the circumstance, I disqualify myself from this case. I will hereby send the case file to the chief judge for re-assignment to another judge,” he added.

PDP Floors APC as INEC Releases more Results

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released some of the results in Saturday's legislative re-run election in Rivers State.
We reported it here earlier today that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) suspended all the election in all constituencies in the state in a statement it released late on Sunday, adding that it ordered the suspension, pending the receipt of a comprehensive report from its field officials and monitors.

Clarifying it’s latest order, INEC said, "The suspension does not affect constituencies where the exercise has been completed and the results declared by the returning officers."

INEC has gone further to disclose that results are ready in one Federal Constituency and 11 state assembly seats where the election was peacefully conducted.

However, the results appear hastily put together, as the figures scored by other parties were missing in several columns.

Below are the official results released by INEC and obtained exclusively by SaharaReporters

Shocking! Buhari under Pressure to Sack Amaechi

Unconfirmed reports have it that Buhari is under pressure from external governmental forces to relieve Amaechi of his duties due to the immense allegations of corruption against him.
There were indications weekend that President Muhammadu Buhari is under pressure from the foreign community to sack his Minister of Transport and former Rivers state governor, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi following his indictment for corruption by the Justice George Omeregi-led Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry, set up to investigate the sale of state assets and the consequent Whitepaper issued by the state government.

On a related note, the federal administration was said to be uncomfortable with unpleasant reports about the disposition of the current Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Lawal Babachir and the President’s Chief of Staff, Alhaji Abba Kyari. The President is reportedly disposed to easing them out of office.

The president is said to be under intense pressure to drop allegedly corrupt appointees from his cabinet to successfully prosecute his administration’s anti-graft war.

A Western diplomat who confided in Nigerian Pilot disclosed that “there is now increased and general erosion of confidence in the president’s ability to prosecute his administration’s anti-graft war. He added that, “about five senior diplomats have had reason to pass similar observations to the presidency after the Rivers state government Whitepaper that indicted your minister of Transport, Amaechi over alleged corruption during his years as governor.”

“If I can recall very vividly, they told the president that until people like Amaechi in his government are excused from government to defend the telling allegations against him, the corruption fight will not be taken seriously,”
he further said.

The declaration by the diplomats he said was buoyed by a letter written by Governor Nyesom Wike to foreign missions and Embassies detailing findings and related documentary evidences including the government Whitepaper of the Justice George Omeregi commission probe report on the state’s finances during the Amaechi years as governor.

Rivers state’s Commissioner of Housing, Emma Okah, who spoke on behalf of the State Government, who spoke to journalists in Port Harcourt last year on the foregoing report had disclosed that the state’s Attorney-General had been mandated to start all legal processes against Amaechi; a former military administrator of Rivers State, Brigadier Anthony Ukpo (Rtd) and some other former political office holders to refund over N97 billion allegedly misappropriated in the sale of the state’s valued assets.

Rivers Re-run Declared Inconclusive by INEC

Due to massive incidence of violence and cancellations of votes during the re-run election in Rivers state, the Independent National Electoral Commission have declared the election inconclusive.
Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission has suspended all the election in all constituencies in the state.

In a statement late on Sunday, the commission said it ordered the suspension, pending the receipt of a comprehensive report from its field officials and monitors.

INEC had already cancelled election in eight local councils in the state because of violence according to P.M news.

Clarifying it’s latest order, INEC said “the suspension does not affect constituencies where the exercise has been completed and the results declared by the returning officers”.

No result so far has been declared officially in the rerun poll for state and national Assembly seats. But INEC said results are ready in one Federal Constituency and 11 state assembly seats.

Elaborating on the suspension, INEC’s Director in charge of Voter Education and Publicity, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, said: “Rather unfortunately, some of these elections witnessed the disruption of the process, including the barricading of some of the INEC Local Government offices and Registration Area Centres (RACs) used for the distribution of Electoral materials which led to the late commencement of the exercise in some places and consequently, its smooth take off.

“Of more serious concern was the level of threats, violence and intimidation of election officials and voters by well-armed thugs and miscreants allegedly acting on behalf of some politicians, which marred the elections in some areas.

“There were reports of numerous attacks resulting in fatalities, kidnappings, ballot snatching, diversion of officials and materials, amongst others, which necessitated its suspension in eight Local Government Areas.

“Regrettably, such deviant behaviour has continued today. Several permanent and ad hoc staff engaged have been attacked, again resulting in fatalities, while some have been forcibly abducted and taken to presently unknown destinations”.

Mr Osaze-Uzzi, stressed that under such difficult circumstance, the Returning Officers were only able to collate and declare results in one Federal and nine State constituencies where the disruption and malpractices were not so widespread.

“Having reviewed the situation, the Commission is compelled to suspend all further action concerning the exercise in all the other constituencies in the State pending the receipt of a comprehensive report from its Field Officials and Monitors.

“For the avoidance of doubt, it should be noted that the suspension does not affect the constituencies where the exercise has been completed and the results declared by the Returning Officers”.

INEC had earlier suspended election in eight local government areas of the state.

Addressing reporters earlier on Sunday the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Aniedi Ikoiwak, said that the cancelation was due to irregularities at the affected local government areas.

Election held in Etche and Asari-Toru Local Government Areas were the latest to be cancelled. In a press statement, the INEC said:

“Further to our earlier pronouncement on the suspension of the re-run in the six Local Government Areas of Khana, Bonny, Gokana, Andoni, Tai and Eleme, following disturbances and violence that impeded the electoral process in those parts of the state, it has become necessary to suspend elections in Etche and Asari-Toru LGAs for the same reasons.

“Please note that the suspension of the re-run elections by INEC is necessitated by the need to forestall breakdown of law and order in the event of further aggravation of crisis.

“INEC needs to put all stakeholders on notice that we are still studying the situation in the other fifteen LGAs, where collations are currently going on”.

Delta as youths blow up pipelines, seize 11 oil tankers

– Protesting youths have blown up pipelines in Ndokwa communities

– The irate youths also seized 11 oil tankers

– Security operatives were drafted to the communities to restore calm

– A reconciliation process is underway to ensure that the feud is resolved

Emerging reports suggests that protesting youths in Ndokwa communities of Delta state have allegedly blown up pipelines following a violent face-off between an oil company, Sterling Global, and the Okpai Community in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of the state.

This Day reports the angry youths also seized 11 oil tankers belonging to the oil company after they reportedly hijacked what was initially a peaceful protest organized by women in the community to draw attention to their plight due to the activities of the oil company.

Sources disclose that four other vehicles were allegedly set ablaze in the ensuing confusion as the protest went out of control. Security operatives were drafted to the area to restore peace with many persons arrested in the process, including the chairman of Okpai community development committee (CDC), Chief John Emordi.

Before the demonstration went awry, women and youths in Okpai community commenced blockade against Sterling Global oil company last Friday in protest against the destruction of their road built by Agip oil company years ago, demanding the reconstruction of the road and general development of the community. Meanwhile, Hon Friday Osanebi, the deputy speaker, Edo state House of Assembly, has met with representatives of Sterling oil company in an effort to resolve the feuds which has reportedly led to many residents fleeing their homes into the bush or taken refuge in neighboring communities to avert arrest.

Popular Pastor Warn Governor El Rufai over his Anti-preaching Bill: Revoke it or You Die!

Founder of Omega Fire and Miracles Ministries in Auchi, Edo State has rained curses on Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State over his directive that pastors and churches must obtain licence before preaching.

The Senior Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleiman, has asked Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to revoke the law regulating religious preaching across the state or die.

It can be recalled that recently, the governor sent a bill to the State House of Assembly to regulate religious preaching across the state.

The bill titled: "A bill for a law to substitute the Kaduna State religious preaching law, 1984", is also aimed at banning the usage of loudspeaker for religious purposes 'other than inside a Mosques or Church and the surrounding areas outside the stipulated prayer times.'

The President of Celebration TV, castigated the governor over his directive that pastors and churches must be licenced to preach.

According to Suleiman, El Rufai has no right to regulate the activities of religious leaders when he has not regulated the activities of traditionalist in the state, adding that before he became governor, there were men of God and that they will still remain men of God when he leaves office.

Buhari's Tough Economic Policies: CBN Proposes New Charges on ATM Cards and Cheque Transactions

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is proposing a N50 charge on every cheque leaflet obtained and used at the deposit money bank's counter.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is proposing a N50 charge on every cheque leaflet obtained and used at the deposit money bank’s counter.

 1 Bitcoin=$413

This is not the same as the collection charge on cheques, which is also proposed to be “one percent of cheque value or Naira equivalent of US $10 whichever is lower”.

The apex bank is also proposing a N100-per-month charge on every debit card (your typical ATM card) – separate from the existing N65 charge after the third withdrawal within the same month.

In its draft on the “guide to charges for banks and other financial institutions in Nigeria”, CBN also proposed a N4,200-per-annum charge on foreign currency denominated cards as maintenance fee.

For naira dominated cards, a monthly maintenance fee of N100 was also proposed for every month a debit card is used, and a N50 charge for other months when card is used or not.

The proposal is coming only 13 days after Nigerians protested excessive bank charges, declaring a ‘No Banking Day’ on March 1, 2016.

For foreign exchange related transactions, where Form M or Form A is needed to request forex from CBN, charges that were hitherto not applicable have now been proposed.

The CBN is proposing a charge of a N100 on Form A, which is used by students to apply for forex on school fees, medical bills, and travel allowances.

Form M, which is predominantly used by manufacturers to import goods (not on the CBN prohibition list), is proposed to henceforth cost “N1,000 in addition to maintenance fee on e-Form platform in line with CBN directive”.

The central bank also added that Nigerians could send in their comments on the proposed charges, seeking clarification and notifying the bank on excluded financial institutions.

“The Central Bank of Nigeria is currently reviewing the extant Guide to Bank Charges, which came into effect on April 1, 2013,” the circular, signed by Kevin Amugo, director financial policy and regulation department, read.

“The review, which is in line with the philosophy of periodically ensuring that the provisions of the guide accord with current realities, also seek to address complaints from customers of financial services, requests for clarification on provision of the guide and absence of a tariff regime for other financial institutions in Nigeria.

“Kindly send hard copies of your comments by March 29, 2016 to the director, financial policy and regulation department with soft copies mailed to gbcreview@cbn.gov.ng.”

It was revealed that deposit money banks currently charge an average of N1,500 for the issuance of a 50-page cheque book.

Agatu Massacre: Fani-Kayode Blasts Buhari

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has blasted President Muhammadu Buhari and the media for not doing enough as heartless Fulani herdsmen commit genocide and go scot-free.

Controversial writer, Former Minister of Aviation and firebrand politician, Femi Fani-Kayode has given president Muhammadu Buhari a final warning over the murder and killings by Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria especially the heartless murder of Agatu community men and women.

In a Facebook message title "A Final Word On The Genocide In Agatu".

FFK lambasted the president for not doing anything about the murder but instead keeps encouraging the genocide.

He wrote:

"A friend of mine just came back from Agatu in Benue state. He is an online journalist and he went with a team of his professional colleagues.

"He told me that at least 500 people were slaughtered by the Fulani herdsmen and militants in Agatu and no less than 9 villages were sacked and burnt to the ground over there.

"Worse still the Fulani did not just kill their victims but they have also occupied what is left of their villages, towns and land.

"My friend actually saw the conquering and victorious Fulanis militants because they had taken full control of the land and towns of their victims.

"He and those that were with him were actually shot at by the militants when they sighted them. He said the whole area now looks like a major war zone and it is utterly destroyed and devastated.

"What a mess. Yet no CNN, BBC or Al Jazeera coverage and hardly anything about it has been reported in our local media. Are the 500 Idomas that were killed in Agatu not human beings?

"Thousands of people have been displaced and many families have lost their homes and loved ones at the hands these Fulani herdsmen and cattlerearers who come from another world yet no-one appears to care.

"Meanwhile our President openly encourages this genocide and ethnic cleansing with his criminal negligence and complicit silence. Enough is enough.

"This bloodletting by the Fulani herdsmen is nothing less than a curse on our nation and the more we tolerate such destruction and mass murder and turn a blind eye to it the more God will make us suffer as a people.

"Injustice and wickedness to others, particularly to the weak, innocent, vulnerable and defenceless in our society, attracts God's wrath.

"President Buhari needs to put a stop to the carnage that his kinsmen are unleashing on the Nigerian people. I am calling him out and I am speaking for those that do not have a voice and the victims of these barbaric acts.

"Buhari must protect the Nigerian people. He must call the perpetrators of these diabolical acts to order and he must punish them.

"He must wage war against them and bring them to justice. He must also repent, make his peace with God and pray very hard before it is too late. Everything depends on it.

"Plato said "no-one is hated more than he who speaks the truth". I have spoken the truth here and I know that I will be hated for it.

"Yet I would be hated for speaking the truth than loved for telling lies and ignoring the torment, cries and pain of those that are being killed and displaced on a daily basis by the Fulani militias and murderers. This madness has to stop."

Obasanjo is Nigeria's Virus - Ex President's First Wife Explodes

Speaking at her Lagos residence on her life and ordeal as a former first lady, Oluremi Obasanjo, the first wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is a mother of six, has described him in unflattering terms.
Below are excerpts from the interview;

You once wrote an autobiography, detailing your life with former President Olusegun Obasanjo. In that book, you described him in unflattering terms. What went wrong in your marriage?

I had to remove a lot of things on the advice of the publishers because they were very bad. I decided to speak out again because I want the world to know the kind of person that Obasanjo is. Up until now, a lot of people do not know that Obasanjo is not a normal father, or a family man. Some people say that it is because he is a soldier, but I know so many soldiers who fought the war and I see how well they take care of their families. So the fact that he is a soldier is not an excuse. He has been very brutish and selfish from the beginning. He has the belief that because his children bear his name, which means they have taken something from him and he has done them a favour. If any of his children does well, he would tell people that it is because of him that the child is doing well.

But that is usually the case in this part of the world…(cuts in)

I do not have any problem if a father takes pride in the fact that his child is doing well. But it is not right when you do not give that child any credit for striving to succeed. Everything should not only be about you. He believes that any of his children that does well did so because of him and not their own efforts. That is a very selfish way of thinking.

Are you implying that he did not take part in the children’s upbringing, especially as regards their education?

He claims that whatever his children are today, they owe it to him, because he believes that none of his children can be intelligent without him. The house where he lives now was designed and supervised by my son, Dr Segun Obasanjo, and what he gave him was less than one tenth of his professional fees. When people asked him why he did that, he said that he was the one that trained Segun in school; therefore he deserved what he was paid. I would want the world to ask Obasanjo if he knew how any of my children went to nursery school. They should ask him if he cared when they were in primary and secondary school.

Nigerians should ask him how many times he ever visited them throughout their schooling years and ask him how much he paid for their tuition. Even the Segun he is talking about, ask him how much he paid for his tuition at Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria. After my children finished their first degrees, I could not afford to send them abroad for their second degrees because it was too expensive. Because of that, they all had to take up jobs to enable them to pay for their schooling abroad. When Iyabo, my first daughter got admission abroad for her second degree, she sent her father a list of the financial requirements for her school, but he cut the required amount into two and was only able to give half of it. Obasanjo gleefully paid school fees for his relatives’ children, but found it difficult to take care of his own kids.

Are you saying in clear terms that Obasanjo did not play any roles in the education of his children?

He played some roles, but that he did it as if he was doing his children a favour. He did not see taking care of the kids as his duty. Before he was able to do anything for his children, I would have gone to Ota to inform him that his children’s fees needed to be taken care of. Most times, when I went, he would angrily tell me that he did not have any money and I would leave. When Segun won two awards in his school, because he graduated with a first class, I told Obasanjo about it and asked whether he would come for his convocation, but he told me he didn’t have the time. I then told him to fund my trip to Zaria so that I could attend, and he told me to go, that he would refund the money. But when I came back and asked him for it, he told me off and said I could go to hell.

What made Obasanjo behave that way to you and the kids? Is it that you had issues with him and he decided to take it out on your children, or is it just his nature?

I have never had it easy with him. Life with him was very tough and unbearable, but I had to endure because of my six children. I remember he wrote a book entitled My Command, and he acknowledged me in the book as having stood by him, keeping the home front. When he was launching the book in Ibadan, the late Chief Bola Ige, who had read the acknowledgement, asked him why the woman who he said stood by him and kept the home front was not standing by his side at the launch. Bola Ige said this because it was the late Stella that was with him at that launch. No woman can live well with Obasanjo, and even the late Stella people are talking about was always beaten by him while they were in Aso Rock. I couldn’t live with him anymore, and as it is, if someone tells me to live with him and promises me a room full of money, I would decline.

At what stage in your marriage did you start noticing these traits that you talk about, because for you to have accepted his marriage proposal, something must have attracted him to you?

I have always been a very quiet person and I was nicknamed ‘gentle’, so I believe that it was what made him want to marry me, because he felt that he could control me. In the first seven years of our marriage, I did whatever he told me to do without asking questions. If he told me to sit at a place without speaking to anyone, I would do it without asking questions. But as the years went by, I realized that whatever he tells you to do is usually for his own selfish interest and benefit and I stopped being foolish. He can never tell you to do anything that would serve your own interest. I continued living with him hoping that things would get better, but rather than improve, things got worse. Before his tenure as head of state ended, we were already separated. I was living in Ikoyi, while he was living in Dodan Baracks, because he felt I was not good enough to be at his side as head of state.

After his tenure, he told me that we should relocate from Lagos to Abeokuta, but I didn’t want it. Already, I wanted a final separation, and I saw his desire for relocation as a good opportunity for me to stay far away from him. When I refused, one of his friends who was a doctor asked him why he was begging me to go to Abeokuta with him. He then advised Obasanjo to take any of the women who had children for him. So he took the late Stella and one other woman called Mabel to Abeokuta because they each had a child for him. So both of them lived there with him, and he took them around to wherever he went. Stella later outshined Mabel to become the first lady.
