South Africa: Slain ANC councillor laid to rest

The African National Congress (ANC) ward councillor Bhekithemba Nyembewho was shot last week has been laid to rest in Nongoma, northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Bhekithemba Nyembe was shot dead on Monday while travelling with his wife. He joined the ANC in 2013 after leaving the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

The killing brings to three the number of ANC leaders killed in the last three months. This after another ANC councillor, Zodwa Sibiya, was killed at the notorious Gleblands hostel recently and an ANC youth league leader at Emalahleni Regional Wandile Ngubeni was gunned down two weeks ago.

Nyembe's family described him as a loving father and husband. The party is concerned and is calling for government to intervene.

Nyembe is survived by his four wives and children.

Police are still investigating the motive of his killing.

The ANC has dismissed allegations that a provincial cabinet reshuffle is looming in KwaZulu-Natal, calling the rumour a media frenzy.
