Halliburton Scandal: Aisha Buhari Sues Fayose to Court

Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari has sued People's Democratic Party chieftain and Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose to court over defamation.

Following the expiration of the grace period given Aisha Buhari to Governor Ayodele Fayose over her involvement in the Halliburton scandal, the wife of the Nigerian President has sued him to court.

Mr. Fayose had in June said Mrs. Buhari was the “Aisha Buhari” named in a U.S. court document, alleged to have been involved in a bribery case involving a convicted former U.S. lawmaker, Williams Jefferson.

This led to a bitter Twitter message by Aisha Buhari who called Fayose an "Unchained mad dog". The tough critic of her husband, Muhammadu Buhari refused to retract his indicting statements and reaffirmed his allegations by challenging her to visit the United States of America which she has intelligently avoided due to fear of arrest by the U.S authorities.

Meanwhile, The governor, in what appeared to be an error, referred to the scandal as the Halliburton corruption case. The Halliburton case is different from the Williams Jefferson scandal.

But Mr. Fayose insisted he was right despite Mrs. Buhari’s denial and threat of legal action. The court summons, dated July 20, 2016, was exclusively made available to Premium Times.

As governor, Mr. Fayose has constitutional immunity against criminal prosecution under the section 308 of the 1999 Nigerian constitution as amended.
